l own a 2006 (new model) & love it. In the snow it is great, will probably be as good as my old Cherokee once l get better tires on it. Off road it did pretty good. It is not a beast, but it handled itself well. l have driven it through mud deep enough to scrape the body & got through just fine. The traction control is great, no need for lockers. l regret not buying a model with low range, but l have read it should not be that hard to add. Reliability is good. l have 23,500 & the only problem was some loose belts last week, But l never went to my 7500 mile service & they probably would have retightened them there. l rarely see another on the road. It looks great. Gas mileage is not bad, l am getting closer to 22-24 avg. In this price range there really is not another good alternative. The Kia Sportage is nice, the Sorento is really nice but a gas hog. l probably would have gone with the Sorento if not for that issue, plus they r everywhere. Rav4 is expensive & it is really a car, the GV is a real truck with a ladder frame & Real wheel drive base. CrV is plain. The Jeeps r cool ( l love jeeps) but reliability & gas mileage r major issues. Good luck & happy hunting.

I've got the 2006 model as well. It has been fabulous - completely reliable, solid, & great to drive. The first poster, regrettably, is probably confusing it with the Suzuki sidekicks from the 1980s, which, while very reliable, were a bit dodgy on the road.

The GV is completely different, with a great interior & exterior, & is genuinely comparable in build quality & on road manners to pretend 4wds like the Rav4, XTrail & CRV.

The difference with the GV is that it, unlike those others mentioned, really is off-road capable thanks to low range, reasonable articulation & a locking centre diff. I've had mine out in deep monsoon rains & floods, in the desert, on the beach, across rocks and, of course, on the road :). It could do with a bit more ground clearance & underbody protection, but there r companies offering lift kits & guards.
