hi there idiscoveredthat the crank seal had gone on my suzuki ap50 moped r-reg..98 model ,i went and got new seal but have no knowledge how to change it.....please can any1 help many thanxs olly

first strip the engine, when you got the crank out you will have to take it to someone who can press the new seals on

Not familair with ur type of moped but usually most crank seals can be pried out with a screwdriver. Just stick it into the rubber ring & carefully pry it out trying not to score the crank or the case. The new seal can be put in by rubbing a little oit on the rubber & slide over shaft & gently pound in witha hammer. keep going aroung the shaft as u strike the seal gently. keep going around & around until it seats. Goodluck. after that. put everything back togather as u took it apart. Now there is probably a centrifical clutch u had to take of too using a puller.
Oh that guy above is crazy. You do not take the engine apart. Then u might as well throw it away. u would be in the rebuilding stage. most if not all seals r as easy as replacing a grease seal on ur wheel hub. Only bearing seats have to be pressed into place at a machine shop.

Hah, u can really tell the people who have actually worked on these engines!!

Right, the AP50 & a lot of other small two strokes often have trouble with the crank seal behind the flywheel failing.

You will need a flywheel extractor tool of the centre thread pull variety, NOT the claw type as this will distort the flywheel & damage it.

Once the flywheel is removed, & the coil backplate, the seal is easily seen as a black ring around the crank.

To remove the seal, use a sharp pointed tool ( scriber, small sharpened screwdriver or bradawl, & push it into the black part of the seal but not between the seal & the ally casing.

You can then lever the seal out of its housing gently so as not to damage the ally.

To fit the new seal, apply a thin coating of a sealant like Hylomar tor the seal edge & place it over the crank, usually u can start to fit the seal using thumb pressure, but the use of a long socket or box spanner will allow the seal to be pushed home.

Refit the coil backplate, & then the flywheel to the correct torque.

Allow at least 5-6 hours for the sealant to fully cure before starting the engine to enable the timing to be set. on completion refit all associated covers.
