It depens on whether or not u have automatic or manual locking hubs. l own a 1996 Geo Tracker 4X4, which is essentially the same vehicle with different badging.
If u have manual-locking hubs, the center of each front wheel will have a circlular hub which u can turn from ''Free'' to ''Lock'' with a 90-degree turn. Then, get back in, pull the 4-Wheel Drive lever up to 4-Hi, & start driving again. To disengage, u need to shift the 4-Wheel Drive lever from 4-Hi to 2-Hi (this can be done at speeds below 45 miles per hour), & you're back in 2-Wheel Drive. For better mileage, pull over & unlock the hubs.
If u have automatic-locking hubs, the center of each front wheel will be flat, with no place to grip it. In this case, u generally need to stop the vehicle, pull the 4-Wheel Drive lever up to 4-Hi, then start driving again. To disengage, u have to stop, put it back in 2-Hi, then reverse at least ten feet, after which u can drive again.
To put it in 4-Lo, u have to stop the vehicle, put the Shifter in Neutral (Manual & Automatic) while keeping ur foot on the brake (and or clutch), shift the 4-Wheel Drive lever from 4-Hi to Neutral to 4-Lo (it should go left, up, then right), put the vehicle back in First gear (manual or automatic). Disengaging requires the same steps - Stop the car, put it the transmission in Neutral while keeping ur foot on the brake and/or clutch, & shift the 4-Wheel Drive lever from 4-Lo to Neutral to 4-Hi.
Note - Never use anything other than First or Second gear for 4-Lo, whether it is an automatic or manual transmission (Automatic, it may be L instead of 1 & 2). It will destroy ur car to do otherwise.
Look on the driver is side sunvisor for exact instructions for both cases, as well as a push-button 4-Wheel Drive if that is what u have.
As for the N/AT/P button, l do not know what that is. l must have a slightly more basic model. If u have an owner is manual, look for it in the index.
If u have any more questions, please feel free to ask.
